Valentine’s Day Traybake Cakes for the School Bake Sale

Quick, easy, and perfect for little helpers

I've had a reminder pop up in the school WhatsApp group that the school bake sale is on the Friday before Valentine's Day this week. Being a busy mum with a full time job, that meant I needed a baking idea that was quick, easy, and realistic — something that looked fun without taking hours in the kitchen.

These easy Valentine’s Day traybake cakes turned out to be the perfect solution. They’re simple to make, ideal for bake sales, and best of all, the kids can get properly involved.

A simple traybake base (perfect for busy parents)

To keep things manageable, I used a traybake cake mix as the base. You can absolutely bake from scratch if you prefer, but when time is tight, cake mixes are a great option — especially for school bake sale baking.

I found this super easy and perfectly themed Old School Cake Mix in pink that was just perfect for the job.

Traybake cakes work brilliantly for events like this because they:

🩷Bake quickly and evenly

🩷Are easy to cut into uniform portions

🩷Transport well

🩷Are budget-friendly

Once baked and cooled, we decorated the cake and cut the it into neat squares ready for the bake sale.

Creating Valentine icing shapes

Rather than icing each cake individually, I made icing shapes in advance. I rolled out ready-made icing and used cutters to create heart shapes, leaving them to firm up slightly before decorating.

This step makes decorating so much easier and less messy, especially when baking with
children.

Getting kids involved in decorating

This was easily the best part. The kids decorated the icing shapes using:

🩷Icing pens

🩷Simple patterns, text, and hearts - we used the school rules of kindness, positivity and respect

Because the icing shapes were separate from the cakes, they could get creative without worrying about ruining anything. Once finished, we simply placed the decorated icing shapes onto the traybake squares.

It’s a great way to let kids help with Valentine’s baking while keeping things calm and fun.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these Valentine traybake cakes in advance?

Yes! You can bake the traybake cake 1–2 days in advance and store it in an airtight container. The icing shapes can also be made ahead of time and kept flat in a sealed container. I’d recommend decorating and assembling the cakes the day before (or the morning of) the bake sale for the best finish.

What traybake cake flavours work best?

Simple flavours work really well for school bake sales. Vanilla, chocolate, or lemon traybake cakes are always popular with kids and easy to decorate. Chocolate traybakes are especially forgiving and tend to stay moist.

Can younger children help with decorating?

Absolutely. Decorating the icing shapes separately makes this a very kid-friendly Valentine’s baking activity. Younger children can use icing pens and sprinkles without worrying about making mistakes on the actual cakes.

How should I package these for a school bake sale?

These Valentine traybake cakes are easy to package individually in:

  • Cellophane bags

  • Small cardboard cake boxes

  • Wrapped greaseproof paper with a ribbon or sticker

Individual packaging also helps keep them fresh and bake-sale ready.

Are traybake cakes suitable for school bake sales?

Definitely. Traybake cakes are one of the best options for school bake sales because they’re quick to make, easy to portion, cost-effective, and simple to decorate in bulk.
